The Artist's Drawing Room (1885) by John Singer Sargent

34,500.00

Loose brushstrokes, thin layers of oil paint and a darker neutral palette depict an intimate view of the artist's living quarters - hanging portraiture, a gilt-mounted table, ceramics, and bentwood chairs are accentuated by the green walls, upon which hangs a round and panelled mirror further reflecting the space. The Artist's Drawing Room is attributed to John Singer Sargent (1856 -1925), who completed studies in oil of the rooms of his apartment in 1885.

The canvas is unsigned and the reverse is stamped with a London Windsor & Newton mark. The painting is from the estate of Count Ivan N. Podgoursky, who obtained it from Castano Galleries of Boston in 1955. This painting was shown as part of "Four Centuries of European Art: An Exhibition of Paintings from the Collection of Count Ivan N. Podgoursky", Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oct.1956 and the Nov.1960 exhibition "Sargent Paintings and Drawings" at the Fort Worth Art Center.

Dimensions: 18 x 24 in.
