1,250.00

A Victorian cameo carved conch shell depicting Diana preparing for the hunt. The scene is delicately carved in varying degrees of relief, with the foreground carved in the highest relief to the background carved in the lowest relief, against a background of contrasting colour. Since the late 19th century, the species most used in good-quality cameos has been the bullmouth helmet, the upper shell layer is whitish, and the lower shell layer is a rich orange-brown. After 1850, demand for such cameos carvings grew and they became popular souvenirs of the Grand Tour among the middle class.
