19th Century German Lüsterweibchen of Polychrome Woman with Shield

A German Lüsterweibchen chandelier, of polychrome painted wood and antler. The upper portion of the figure depicts the body of a woman, dressed in a feather cap and stiff bolero jacket over a red dress, having the tail of a mermaid. The figure holds a gold-painted shield on which a black eagle is painted.

A Lüsterweibchen is a chandelier consisting of antlers arranged horizontally with a female half-figure placed at one end. Antlers used were typically those of deer or elk. The very first of these chandeliers were made at the end of the 14th century. They found wider distribution in southern Germany throughout the 16th century and again rose to popularity at the end of the 19th century.
